WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE
CERTIFICATION LABEL AND THE PUBLIC VIN PLATE?
The VIN plate is visible through the windshield and is commonly made
of metal and attached with rivets. The Certification Label contains the
VIN plus additional information such as weight ratings, date of
manufacture and more. It’s a sticker that is located on the driver’s
door edge or the door-pillar. The VIN plate is the primary identifier of
the vehicle while the certification label is only a secondary identifier.
WHY REPLACE THE CERTIFICATION LABEL?
It's as simple as returning the damaged vehicle to pre-loss condition.
But it goes further than pre-loss condition. Vehicle owners, repair
shops, law enforcement and insurance carriers all rely on its
information. For example, without the date of manufacture the owner
won’t know if the vehicle is subject to a recall.
WHY DO YOU SHARE INFORMATION WITH THE NATIONAL INSURANCE CRIME BUREAU?
Reputable body shops replace the Certification Label because the
information is important to the vehicle owner, the body shop and the
insurance carriers. Automotive ID is committed to preventing potential
abuse by anyone attempting to further the theft of a stolen vehicle. The
NICB is committed to preventing, detecting and defeating insurance
fraud and vehicle theft. The NICB partners with insurers and law
enforcement agencies to facilitate the identification, detection and
prosecution of insurance criminals.
IS IT LEGAL TO REPLACE THE CERTIFICATION LABEL?

knowingly working on a stolen vehicle.
